SMSTS Course Online vs Classroom: Which Training Format Fits Your Work Schedule?

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme, better known as SMSTS, is a five-day CITB course for site managers, project managers and anyone stepping into a management role. Whichever way you take it, you leave with the same CITB certificate, valid for five years.

What changes is how those five days fit around your job. Here is a straight comparison of the SMSTS course online and in the classroom to help you choose.

How the Online SMSTS Course Works

An online SMSTS course is not a set of videos you watch whenever you like. It is a live virtual classroom run by a CITB-approved tutor at set times, usually on a video call platform. You join from home or the site office, take part in discussions and group tasks, and sit the final assessment remotely.

To take part you will need:

  • A laptop or desktop with a working webcam and microphone
  • A stable internet connection that can handle video all day
  • A quiet space where you can stay on camera for every session
  • Photo ID to show the tutor at the start

Attendance rules are the same as in a classroom. Miss a session or drift off camera and you may not be allowed to sit the exam.

How the Classroom SMSTS Course Works

Classroom courses run at a training centre, normally over five consecutive days. You are away from site, calls and emails, which many delegates say helps them concentrate. You also pick up a lot from other managers in the room: how they handle CDM duties, run toolbox talks or deal with a difficult subcontractor.

Which Format Fits Your Work Schedule?

Choose online if

  • You cannot leave site for a full week and a day-release option, one day a week over five weeks, suits you better.
  • The nearest training centre is a long drive away.
  • Your employer wants to cut travel and accommodation costs.

Choose the classroom if

  • You learn better in person and want a clean break from work.
  • Your home connection is unreliable or your household is busy during the day.
  • You want to build contacts with other managers in your region.

Things That Apply to Both Formats

Both formats follow the same CITB syllabus and finish with an assessment. Employers registered with CITB may be able to claim a grant towards the cost. Plan your renewal too: the two-day SMSTS Refresher course must be completed before your certificate expires, otherwise you will need to take the full five-day course again. If you supervise rather than manage, the shorter SSSTS course may be the better fit.
