What is the CSCS Trainee Card?
The CSCS Trainee Card is the red card for people who have signed up for a construction qualification but haven’t finished it yet. That might be an NVQ Level 2 in your trade, an SVQ, or an HNC, HND or degree. It shows a site manager that you’re in training and that you’ve passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. The standard card lasts five years and can’t be renewed, so the plan is simple: complete the qualification before the card runs out, then move to a skilled card.
Who Can Apply for the CSCS Trainee Card?
This card is for people who are learning but aren’t on a formal apprenticeship. We mostly see applications from:
- Site workers registered for an NVQ or SVQ in their trade who haven't completed it yet
- Students on a construction-related HNC, HND or degree who need site access
- College leavers holding an approved Level 2 or higher construction qualification
- Green card holders who have picked a trade and enrolled on a qualification

Eligibility Requirements
CSCS issues the trainee card on two routes, and each one asks for different evidence. Check which fits you before you apply:
- Five-year card: proof you're registered for an NVQ or SVQ (dated within the last 2 years) or an HNC, HND or degree (within the last 4 years)
- Two-year card: an approved Level 2 or higher construction qualification from college, achieved within the last 5 years
- A pass in the Operative level CITB HS&E test, taken within the last 2 years
- Photo ID and a passport-style photo that match the details on your application

How to Apply for the CSCS Trainee Card
Registration comes first, because CSCS won’t issue the card without it. After that it’s the test and the paperwork. If your pass is more than two years old, book a CITB test before you apply.
- Register for your qualification and ask the provider for written confirmation.
- Book and pass the Operative level CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
- Get your documents together: photo ID, registration proof and test pass.
- Apply online through CSCS, or send us your details and we'll submit the application for you.
- Watch your email for approval. The digital card usually shows up before the plastic one.

Renewal and Validity
It depends which one you hold. The five-year CSCS Trainee Card can’t be renewed. You’re expected to finish your qualification before it expires and then apply for a skilled card. The two-year card, issued on the back of a college qualification, can be renewed once. Show that you’ve registered for an NVQ, SVQ or approved alternative and you’ll get a three-year card, and that one is final. Either way, the only way off a trainee card is to complete the qualification.

How Long Does It Take to Receive the CSCS Trainee Card?
After CSCS approves your application, the CSCS Trainee Card usually lands in 7 to 10 working days. You don’t have to wait for the post before you start work. The digital card tends to appear in the My CSCS app first.
Late cards nearly always trace back to one of three things: the registration letter is out of date, the test result hasn’t reached CSCS yet, or the name on your ID doesn’t match the application. We check all three before we submit.

Do I need to pass the CITB test?
Yes. You need the Operative level CITB HS&E test, passed in the last 2 years. Applicants on academic courses can use the CIC Health and Safety Test instead.
How long does the card take to arrive?
Usually 7–10 working days after CSCS approves your application. The digital card tends to show up sooner.
Which card comes after the trainee card?
That depends on what you complete. An NVQ Level 2 leads to the blue Skilled Worker card and Level 3 to the gold. Degree, HNC and HND holders usually apply for the Academically Qualified Person card.
