What is the CSCS Green Labourer Card?
The CSCS Green Labourer Card is the card most people start with on a UK building site. It tells the site manager two things: you’ve passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test, and you hold the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. It covers labouring work only, so you can’t use it for a skilled trade. Since February 2025, a first card lasts 2 years rather than 5. Who Can Apply for the CSCS Green Labourer Card?
If your job is to keep a site moving rather than to practise a trade, this is your card. We mostly see applications from:
- General labourers and site operatives who fetch, carry, clear and tidy
- People starting their first site job without a trade qualification
- Mates and assistants working alongside bricklayers, groundworkers or scaffolders
- Provisional (red) card holders whose six months are nearly up

Eligibility Requirements
CSCS asks for four things before it will issue a green labourer card. Tick these off and your application should go through first time:
- You work, or are about to start work, in a labouring job on a construction site
- A pass in the CITB Operatives HS&E test, taken within the last 2 years
- The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, or an alternative CSCS accepts
- Photo ID and a passport-style photo that match the details on your application

How to Apply for the CSCS Green Labourer Card
You can do all of this yourself through CSCS, or hand it to us and we’ll book, check and submit everything for you. Either way, the order is the same:
- Complete the one-day Health and Safety Awareness course to gain your Level 1 Award.
- Book and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for operatives.
- Get your documents together: photo ID, your Level 1 certificate and your test pass.
- Apply online through CSCS, or send us your details and we'll submit the application for you.
- Pay the card fee. Your digital card usually shows up before the plastic one.

Renewal and Validity
Yes, you can renew a CSCS Green Labourer Card, but there’s a condition. Your first card runs for 2 years. If you’re still labouring when it expires, you can renew for 5 years by showing CSCS evidence that you’re employed in a labouring role. The CITB test you sat for your first card counts for 3 years, so most people don’t need to resit it for that first renewal. Your Level 1 Award never expires. If you’ve moved into a trade by then, skip the renewal and apply for the card that fits your new job. An NVQ course is the usual route to a blue or gold card.

How Long Does It Take to Receive the CSCS Green Labourer Card?
Once your application is approved, the CSCS Green Labourer Card normally arrives in 7 to 10 working days. You won’t be left waiting on the post, though. The digital version of your card usually appears in the My CSCS app sooner, so you have something to show while the plastic card is on its way.
When a card is late, it’s nearly always for one of three reasons: the test result hasn’t reached CSCS yet, the Level 1 certificate is missing, or the name on your ID doesn’t match the application. We check all three before anything is submitted.
