coteca.co.uk > Blog > Which CITB Test Do You Need for a Green CSCS Card?
People often search for the “CITB green card test” as if it were a separate exam. In fact, the test you need for a green CSCS card is the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test for Operatives. Book the wrong one and your card application will be turned down.
Here is how to tell which CITB test you need, what the Operatives test involves, and what else you need for the green labourer card.
CITB runs three main HS&E tests. Only one of them is right for a labourer applying for a green card.
Book this one
For labourers, trades and site operatives. This is the CITB Operatives test you need for the CSCS Green Labourer Card, and for most blue and gold trade cards too.
Not for green
For specialist trades such as demolition, plumbing, lifts or highway works. It is taken instead of the Operatives test for those roles, so it is not the one for a green labourer card. See the Specialists test.
Not for green
For supervisors, managers and professionals heading for gold, black or white cards. It is not needed for a labourer card.
You have 45 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 45 correct answers to pass. The questions cover health and safety law, PPE, manual handling, working at height, site transport, fire safety and environmental awareness.
Your pass is valid for two years, so apply for your card within that time. If you are wondering whether you can sit it from home, read our guide to taking the CITB test online.
Since February 2025, a first green card lasts two years. When you pick up a trade and finish an NVQ, you can move up to a blue skilled worker card.
Send us your details and we will book the right test at a centre near you, help you with the one-day course and apply for your green labourer card once you pass. Visit our CITB test centre page or call us on 0208 099 4324.
