coteca.co.uk > Blog > CSCS Black Manager Card Application: What to Do If Your NVQ Qualification Is Not Yet Complete
The CSCS Black Manager Card is the card most main contractors want their site and project managers to carry. The catch is that CSCS will only issue it once your management qualification is complete, and a Level 6 NVQ can take many months to finish.
If you are already running sites but your NVQ is still in progress, you are not stuck. Here is what you can do now, and how to make the switch to the black card as smooth as possible.
CSCS checks two things for the black card: a completed construction management NVQ or SVQ (usually Level 6 or 7), and a pass in the CITB Managers and Professionals test from the last two years. Being registered on the NVQ is not enough, and neither is experience on its own. Courses such as the SMSTS course are valuable for managers, but they do not replace the NVQ.
Option 1
If you work in a management, supervisory or technical role and are registered on an NVQ at Level 3 or above, the Red TSM card covers you on site for three years while you finish. It cannot be renewed.
Option 2
If you hold a Gold Supervisor card or a Blue card that is still valid, you can keep using it while you complete your management NVQ, as long as your site accepts it for your role.
Option 3
Your test pass lasts two years. Taking it early means one less thing to wait for once your NVQ certificate arrives.
Option 4
Most delays come from missing evidence. Agree a plan with your assessor and set aside time each week for your portfolio and professional discussion.
We can check where you are in your NVQ, apply for a temporary card if you need one, book your MAP test and handle the black card application when you are ready. See our NVQ Level 6 courses or the Black CSCS card page, or call us on 0208 099 4324.
