What is the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card?
The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is the first card in the Construction Plant Competence Scheme. It shows a site manager that you’ve been trained on a specific machine, such as a 360 excavator, forward tipping dumper or telehandler, and that you’ve passed the CPCS theory and practical tests for that category. It lets you operate the plant on site while you build up the experience you need to be signed off as fully competent. The card lasts 2 years and cannot be renewed.
The red card is a stepping stone, and the upgrade is built in. Complete the NVQ in plant operations for your category while the card is valid, and you can move up to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, which lasts 5 years and can be renewed. You can see every category we book on our CPCS training page.
Who Can Apply for the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card?
If you want to operate plant on a construction site, this is usually where you start. We mostly see applications from:
- New plant operators who have finished their CPCS training
- Labourers and groundworkers moving into plant operation
- Experienced operators from other schemes who now need a CPCS card
- Blue card holders adding a brand new category for the first time
Already passed your CPCS tests? You're most of the way there.

How to Apply for the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card
Do things in the right order and the red card follows quickly. Start with the HS&E test, because CPCS needs a pass from the 2 years before your plant tests. If you don’t have one yet, book a CITB test first.
- Book and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
- Choose your plant category and complete the training for that machine.
- Pass the CPCS theory test and then the CPCS practical test at an accredited test centre.
- Send us your test results and photo ID, and we'll submit the card application for you.
- Pay the card fee. Once CPCS approves it, your red card is printed and posted out.

Renewal and Validity
The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card lasts 2 years from issue and it can’t be renewed. If you’re registered on your NVQ but won’t finish in time, a one-off 12-month extension is available for a fee. If the card has been expired for more than 12 months, you’ll need to retake the HS&E test and the CPCS theory and practical tests to get a new red card.
