What is the CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card?
The CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card is the gold card for skilled tradespeople who work at the top level of their craft. It tells a site manager that you hold an NVQ Level 3 or an approved apprenticeship in your trade, and that you’ve passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. You may still hear people on site call it the Gold Skilled Worker card. It isn’t the same as the CSCS Gold Supervisory Card, which is for people who run a team rather than work on the tools. The card lasts 5 years, you can renew it, and it only covers the occupation printed on it.
Who Can Apply for the CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card?
This card is for tradespeople who carry out skilled, complex work and hold a Level 3 qualification to prove it. Most of the applications we handle come from:
- Tradespeople with an NVQ or SVQ Level 3 in a construction occupation
- People who finished an approved apprenticeship, such as NJCBI or BATJIC
- Holders of a City and Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate from an employer-sponsored apprenticeship
- Blue Skilled Worker card holders who have just completed their Level 3

Eligibility Requirements
Before CSCS issues an Advanced Craft card, it checks three things: your qualification, your test pass and your identity. Get these ready first and your application should go through without delays:
- An NVQ or SVQ Level 3 in a construction occupation, or an approved apprenticeship in your trade
- A pass in the CITB HS&E test for your occupation, taken within the last 2 years
- Your qualification certificate, in the same name as your ID
- Photo ID and a passport-style photo that match your application

How to Apply for the CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card
Once you hold your Level 3, the application itself doesn’t take long. If your test pass is more than two years old, book a CITB test before you apply.
- Finish your NVQ Level 3, or have your apprenticeship certificate ready.
- Book and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for your occupation.
- Gather your documents: photo ID, qualification certificate and test pass.
- Apply online through CSCS, or send your details to us and we'll submit the application for you.
- Pay the card fee. Your digital card normally appears before the plastic one arrives.

Renewal and Validity
Yes. The CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card is valid for 5 years and you can renew it each time it expires. Your NVQ Level 3 doesn’t run out, so you won’t need to repeat it. What you do need is a new CITB test pass, taken within the 2 years before you renew. You can apply from 6 months before the expiry date up to 6 months after it. If you now run a gang or a section of the job, look at the Gold Supervisory card before you renew, as it may suit your role better.

How Long Does It Take to Receive the CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card?
Once CSCS approves your application, the CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card usually arrives within 7 to 10 working days. You don’t have to wait for the post to start work, though. The digital card normally appears in the My CSCS app first, so you have proof to show on site while the plastic card is on its way.
When a card is late, it’s nearly always for one of three reasons: the test result hasn’t reached CSCS yet, the NVQ certificate can’t be verified, or the name on your ID doesn’t match the application. We check all three before anything is submitted.
