When it comes to construction work, the need for heavy machines such as diggers, cranes, and forklifts is a common requirement. And proper training, along with certification, is a must to work with these machines accident-free. The UK recognizes two certification schemes, mainly for plant operators, CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) and NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme). Despite being both trusted, they are different in their operations. If you are confused about which one to choose, this guide will point out the key differences that will help you in making the right choice regarding your work, goals, and budget.
CPCS is among the most famous schemes in the construction business in the UK. Besides, it has been around longer than other schemes. It also sets the highest standards for construction training, which attracts the trust of some of the largest companies and major building sites.
To start with CPCS, you need to get a Red Trained Operator Card first. The card involves taking a theory exam and a practical exam at an authorized CPCS testing facility. After passing the test, you have up to two years to finish the NVQ that corresponds to your chosen plant category. Upon completion of NVQ, you will be issued a Blue Competent Operator Card, which is valid for five years.
Since CPCS assessments have to be conducted at registered centres, the overall process tends to be more formal and organized. This may be beneficial for individuals who prefer clear rules along with standardized testing methods. This is also the reason why many large-scale or high-risk construction projects choose CPCS.
NPORS is another renowned scheme that has been getting more and more popular over time. And one of the reasons is the flexibility offered with NPORS, which is the complete opposite of its rigorous counterpart. You can take your NPORS evaluation in either a training center or your own job site, with the machines you are already familiar with. This not only saves time but also reduces costs, which is particularly beneficial for employers who have several workers in training at once.
NPORS provides various types of cards. The NPORS CSCS logo card is the most popular choice, and it can be used in the same way as other CSCS-based schemes at the same sites. NPORS also maintains a traditional NPORS card for sectors that are not part of construction, such as factories, logistics, and agriculture.
Similar to CPCS, NPORS also adopts a two-step process. The first one is obtaining a trained card and then completing an NVQ to acquire a competent card. Both schemes evaluate theory and practical skills while requiring the CITB HS&E Test.
The major distinguishing factor is the location of the tests.
For the employees who live very far from a training center, NPORS can reduce travel time as well as transport costs. For the corporations that want their employees to be trained in environments similar to their actual workplaces, on-site NPORS testing is a great advantage.
NPORS is priced lower on most occasions. Training at NPORS is carried out on-site, and machines do not have to be hired from a center, so the total cost of NPORS training is usually less than CPCS. CPCS testing is typically more expensive because it calls for strict, center-based assessments; thus, the costs are higher.
For individuals who are responsible for paying their own way or small firms that are training several staff at once, NPORS can be the more budget-friendly option.
CPCS has been the “go-to” card for many years. It is still the preferred option of big contractors and high-risk projects because it indicates a high level of standardized training. If you are planning to work on large infrastructure sites, railway projects, or high-profile buildings, CPCS may be the safer option.
On the other hand, NPORS has gained widespread recognition and acceptance, particularly after introducing the CSCS logo card. Many construction sites now accept NPORS CSCS cards just like CPCS. Also, NPORS is applicable in non-construction industries; thus, it has a wider scope of application.
NPORS is definitely the one that can offer more flexibility. It offers on-site assessments, easier group training and shorter lead time. In contrast, CPCS is less flexible because of its strict test-centre rules, but at the same time, these same rules do help make its reputation strong.
The two schemes both have a Red card (trained) and a Blue card (competent) in common.
Both schemes demand an NVQ to move from Red to Blue. This allows for a cross-over between schemes if necessary, provided that the NVQ is in the same plant category.
CPCS is an ideal option if:
For many operators who are planning to stay in construction for the long term, CPCS is a safe job offer.
NPORS may be the better option if:
For many workers, NPORS provides the same job opportunities as CPCS but at a lower cost and with less traveling involved.
The decision between CPCS and NPORS depends on your aspirations. If you want major project approval, CPCS might be the right way. If you prefer a flexible and cheaper alternative, NPORS is quite often the best choice. There is no doubt that both schemes are a guarantee for safe and skilled work, and they also contribute to a long-term career progression.
The only thing that is important is to identify the option that suits your job, finances, and future plans. In case of doubt, a conversation with a training professional can assist you in making the right choice.
