CITB Test Online: What Can Be Done Remotely and What Cannot?

If you are trying to get onto a UK site quickly, it is natural to ask whether the CITB test can be taken online. Plenty of adverts suggest you can sit it from your sofa. The honest answer is that some parts of the process happen online, but the test itself does not. Knowing where that line sits will save you time, money and a wasted trip.

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test is the touchscreen test most people need before applying for a CSCS card. It has 50 multiple-choice questions and you get 45 minutes to answer them. Here is what you can sort out remotely and what still needs you in a test centre.

What You Can Do Online for the CITB Test

Book and manage your test

Booking is done online or over the phone. You pick the right test for your role (Operatives, Specialists or Managers and Professionals), choose a centre and select a date that fits around work. At Coteca we can book your CITB HS&E test for you, check you have chosen the correct version and send the confirmation straight to your inbox. If plans change, you can usually move the date remotely as long as you stay within the notice period in your booking terms.

Revise for the test

Almost all preparation can happen at home. Official CITB revision material, the CITB app and practice tests let you work through the question bank in short bursts, on a break or during the commute. A few timed mock tests are the best way to find weak areas, such as working at height or hazardous substances, before the real thing.

Complete the Health and Safety Awareness course

Many people mix up the HS&E test with the one-day Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course needed for the Green Labourer card. They are separate. The Health and Safety Awareness course can be done online through approved providers, either as a live virtual class or as a CITB eCourse with an online invigilated exam.

Apply for your CSCS card

Once you have passed, the card application itself is online. You will need your test ID, proof of identity and any qualification evidence the card type asks for.

What Cannot Be Done Remotely

Sitting the HS&E test

The test is taken in person at an approved test centre, on a touchscreen, under supervision. This is what keeps the result trusted by employers and site managers. There is no legitimate way to sit the CITB HS&E test at home and receive a valid pass, so treat any website promising that with real caution.

Identity checks on the day

Staff at the centre check your photo ID before you start. Bring the ID named in your confirmation, arrive around 15 minutes early and expect to leave your phone and bag in a locker. Turning up late or with the wrong ID can mean losing your slot and your fee.

Getting help during the test

You cannot use notes, apps or another person once the test starts. If you need support, such as a voiceover in another language or extra time for a learning difficulty, request it when you book rather than on the day.

Quick Checklist Before Test Day

  • Confirm the test type matches the card you want.
  • Check the centre address and how long it takes to get there.
  • Do at least two full timed practice tests.
  • Pack the correct photo ID.
  • Keep your confirmation email handy.
