Green vs Blue CSCS Card: What's the Difference and Which One Is Yours?

The green vs blue CSCS card question comes down to one thing: do you labour, or do you practise a trade? The green card is for labourers. The blue card is for skilled workers who hold a Level 2 qualification in their trade. Site managers check the colour at the gate, and turning up with the wrong one can mean being sent home.

Below we compare the two cards on who they’re for, what you need to get one, how long they last and how to move from green to blue when you’re ready.

The Green CSCS Card: For Labourers

The CSCS Green Labourer Card is where most people begin. It shows you understand basic site safety and can work as a labourer: moving materials, clearing up, setting out work areas and helping the trades.

To get one you need two things. The first is the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, which most people gain on a one-day course. The second is a pass in the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test from the last two years. No trade qualification is asked for.

One point catches people out. A first green card now lasts two years, not five. You can renew it only if you can show you’re still working as a labourer.

The Blue CSCS Card: For Skilled Trades

The Blue Skilled Worker card tells a site that you’re qualified in a trade. Bricklayers, carpenters, plasterers, dryliners, painters and groundworkers are typical holders. The card names your occupation, and that is the work you’re cleared to do.

The requirement is a construction NVQ or SVQ at Level 2 in that trade, or an apprenticeship that includes one. You also need to pass the CITB test at the level set for your occupation. For most trades that is the Operatives test, though some specialist jobs need the Specialists test.

The blue card lasts five years. You renew it with a fresh test pass, and your NVQ never expires.

Which Card Should You Apply For?

Match the card to what you do on site today, not what you hope to do next year.

  • You labour and have no trade qualification: apply for the green card.
  • You hold an NVQ Level 2 or finished an apprenticeship: apply for the blue card.
  • You’ve done the trade for years but never got the paperwork: you can’t get a blue card on experience alone. Register for the NVQ and ask about the red Experienced Worker card while you complete it.
  • You labour now but are learning a trade: hold the green card for the moment and plan the NVQ.

Doing skilled work on a green card is the mistake to avoid. If a site audit picks it up, both you and your employer have a problem.

How to Move from a Green to a Blue Card

The step up is the qualification. Once you’re working in a trade, you can be assessed for an NVQ Level 2 on site while you earn. An assessor watches you work, looks at photos and witness statements, and signs off each unit. There’s no classroom exam.

When the certificate arrives, check your CITB test is still in date, then apply for the blue card. Because a first green card runs out after two years, it makes sense to start the NVQ well before then.

Green or Blue: Get the Right Card First Time

Both cards start with the same step, a pass in the CITB test. After that the routes split: a one-day course for green, an NVQ for blue. If you tell us what you do on site and which certificates you already hold, we’ll confirm the card you qualify for and book whatever is missing. That way you apply once and get on site with the right colour in your pocket.
