CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card

What is the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card?

The CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card is the full plant operator card in the Construction Plant Competence Scheme. It tells a site manager that you’ve done more than pass a test: you’ve worked on the machine, built up real hours and achieved the NVQ that proves you can run it safely without supervision. Each card lists the categories you’re competent in, such as a 360 excavator, forward tipping dumper or telehandler, so it only covers the plant you’ve qualified on. The card lasts 5 years and you can renew it.

Most operators get here from the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card. Once you hold a blue card, the upgrade route is to add more categories to it, or step into lifting supervision and planning with courses such as the CPCS A61 Appointed Person.

Who Can Apply for the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card?

If you already operate plant and you’ve finished your qualification, this is the card to aim for. We mostly see applications from:

Renewal and Validity

Yes. The CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card lasts 5 years and you can renew it each time it runs out, usually from three months before the expiry date. Your NVQ doesn’t expire, so you won’t repeat it. To renew, you need a CITB HS&E test pass from the last 2 years, the CPCS CPD renewal for each category, and proof you still operate the machine, such as a completed CPCS logbook or an on-site assessment. If your card has been expired for a long time, extra tests may be needed, so it pays to renew on time.
