What is the CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card?
The CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card, also called the Advanced Craft card, is for tradespeople working at the top level of their craft. It tells a site manager that you hold an NVQ Level 3 or an approved apprenticeship, and that you’ve passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. It’s a different card from the gold Supervisor card, which is for people who run a team. The card lasts 5 years, you can renew it, and it only covers the trade printed on the back.
Who Can Apply for the CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card?
If you do the complex work in your trade and have the qualification to prove it, this is your card. We mostly see applications from:
- Tradespeople holding an NVQ or SVQ Level 3 in a construction occupation
- People who completed an approved apprenticeship, such as NJCBI or BATJIC
- Holders of a City and Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate from an employer-sponsored apprenticeship
- Blue card holders who have just finished their Level 3
Already hold your NVQ Level 3? You're most of the way there.
Eligibility Requirements
CSCS checks three things before it issues a gold card: your qualification, your test pass and your identity. Have these ready and your application should go through first time:
- A construction-related NVQ or SVQ Level 3, or an approved apprenticeship in your trade
- A pass in the CITB HS&E test at the right level for your occupation, taken within the last 2 years
- Your qualification certificate, showing the same name as your ID
- Photo ID and a passport-style photo that match the details on your application
Cards You Can Move Up to After the Gold Skilled Worker Card
Gold is the top card for hands-on trade work. From here the route goes into supervision, management or a professional role. You can compare every option on our CSCS cards page:
How to Apply for the CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card
With your Level 3 in hand, the application itself is quick. If your test pass is more than two years old, book a CITB test before you apply.
- Complete your NVQ Level 3, or have your apprenticeship certificate to hand.
- Book and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for your occupation.
- Get your documents together: photo ID, qualification certificate and test pass.
- Apply online through CSCS, or send us your details and we'll submit the application for you.
- Pay the card fee. Your digital card usually shows up before the plastic one.

Renewal and Validity
Yes. The CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card lasts 5 years and you can renew it each time it runs out. Your NVQ Level 3 doesn’t expire, so you won’t repeat it. What you do need is a fresh pass in the CITB test, taken within the 2 years before you renew. You can apply from 6 months before the expiry date and up to 6 months after it. If you now run a gang or a section of the job, check whether the gold Supervisor card suits you better before you renew.
How Long Does It Take to Receive the CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card?
Once your application is approved, the CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card normally arrives in 7 to 10 working days. You won’t be left waiting on the post, though. The digital version usually appears in the My CSCS app sooner, so you have something to show on site while the plastic card is on its way.
When a card is late, it’s nearly always for one of three reasons: the test result hasn’t reached CSCS yet, the NVQ certificate can’t be verified, or the name on your ID doesn’t match the application. We check all three before anything is submitted.
