What is the CSCS Apprentice Card?
The CSCS Apprentice Card is the red card for people registered on a recognised construction apprenticeship. It tells a site manager that you’re still training, that you’re signed up with an employer and a training provider, and that you’ve covered basic site safety. The card runs for four years and six months, which is long enough to finish most apprenticeships. It can’t be renewed. Once you complete, you move on to the skilled card for your trade, which for most people is the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Who Can Apply for the CSCS Apprentice Card?
You can apply as soon as your apprenticeship is registered. You don’t need any site experience first. Most applications we handle come from:
- School and college leavers starting a Level 2 or Level 3 construction apprenticeship
- Adults who have changed career and signed an apprenticeship agreement with an employer
- Apprentice bricklayers, joiners, plasterers, roofers and painters who need site access
- Employers and training providers applying on behalf of a new starter
Signed up to an apprenticeship? You're most of the way there.
Eligibility Requirements
CSCS looks at three things for this card: proof that your apprenticeship is registered, a health and safety pass, and your identity. Get these together before you apply:
- Registration on an apprenticeship that appears on the CSCS list of approved apprenticeship standards
- Proof of that registration: a letter or email from your training provider, or your apprenticeship agreement
- A CITB HS&E test pass from the last 2 years, or an accepted alternative such as the one-day Health and Safety Awareness course
- Photo ID and a passport-style photo that match the details on your application
Cards You Can Move Up to After the CSCS Apprentice Card
The apprentice card is a stepping stone. When your apprenticeship is signed off, the level you finished at decides your next card. Every option is set out on our CSCS cards page:
How to Apply for the CSCS Apprentice Card
The application itself is short. Most of the waiting is for paperwork from your training provider. If you haven’t done the safety test yet, book a CITB test first so your pass is ready.
- Get registered on your apprenticeship and ask your provider for written proof.
- Pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, or complete an accepted alternative.
- Get your documents together: photo ID, registration proof and test pass.
- Apply online through CSCS, or send us your details and we'll submit the application for you.
- Keep an eye on your email. The digital card usually shows up before the plastic one.

Renewal and Validity
No. The CSCS Apprentice Card is valid for four years and six months, and it can’t be renewed or extended. CSCS expects you to finish your apprenticeship inside that time. When you do, you apply for the skilled card that matches your qualification: blue after a Level 2 apprenticeship, gold after Level 3. If you lose or damage the card before then, you can order a replacement.
How Long Does It Take to Receive the CSCS Apprentice Card?
Once your application is approved, the CSCS Apprentice Card normally arrives in 7 to 10 working days. The digital version usually appears in the My CSCS app sooner, so you can show it at the gate while the plastic card is in the post.
Hold-ups usually come from one of three places: the apprenticeship evidence is missing a date or a signature, the test result hasn’t reached CSCS yet, or the name on your ID doesn’t match the application. We check all three before anything goes in.
