What is the CSCS Red Experienced Worker Card?
The CSCS Red Experienced Worker Card is a temporary card for people who already know their trade but have never had it written down on a certificate. You might have ten years of plastering behind you and nothing to show a site manager. This card covers that gap. To get it you must be registered for a construction NVQ Level 2 or higher and hold a recent CITB test pass. It lasts 1 year and can’t be renewed, so the plan is simple: finish the NVQ inside that year, then swap to a skilled card.
Who Can Apply for the CSCS Red Experienced Worker Card?
This card suits people with real site experience and no formal qualification yet. The applications we handle most often come from:
- Tradespeople with at least one year of site experience in the last three
- Workers who learned on the job and never completed an NVQ or apprenticeship
- People whose old card has expired and who now need a qualification to get a new one

Eligibility Requirements
CSCS wants proof of three things: that you’ve done the job, that you’re registered for the qualification, and that you’ve passed the test. Have these ready before you apply:
- On-the-job experience in your trade, normally at least one year within the last three
- Proof that you registered for a construction NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or higher within the last 2 years
- A pass in the CITB HS&E test at the right level for your occupation, taken within the last 2 years
- Photo ID and a passport-style photo that match the details on your application

How to Apply for the CSCS Red Experienced Worker Card
The order matters here. Register for the NVQ first, because CSCS won’t accept the application without it. If you don’t have a pass from the last two years, book a CITB test at the same time.
- Register for an NVQ Level 2 or higher in your trade and keep the registration letter.
- Book and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for your occupation.
- Get your documents together: photo ID, NVQ registration proof and test pass.
- Apply online through CSCS, or send us your details and we'll submit the application for you.
- Pay the card fee, then use the year to complete your NVQ assessment on site.

Renewal and Validity
No. The CSCS Red Experienced Worker Card lasts 1 year and can’t be renewed. CSCS expects you to complete your NVQ before the card runs out. When your certificate comes through, you apply for the matching skilled card, which for most trades is the Blue Skilled Worker Card. Leave the assessment too late and you could be off site until the NVQ is finished, so book it early.

How Long Does It Take to Receive the CSCS Red Experienced Worker Card?
Once your application is approved, the CSCS Red Experienced Worker Card normally arrives in 7 to 10 working days. You don’t have to wait for the post, though. The digital version usually appears in the My CSCS app first, so you have something to show at the gate straight away.
When a card is late, it’s nearly always for one of three reasons: the test result hasn’t reached CSCS yet, the NVQ registration can’t be confirmed with the awarding body, or the name on your ID doesn’t match the application. We check all three before anything is submitted.
