CITB Test for Managers in London, Bristol, Aberdeen, Scotland and Across The UK

About the CITB HS&E Test for Managers and Professionals

The Managers and Professionals test, often shortened to MAP, checks that the people in charge on site understand their health, safety and environmental duties. Site and project managers, supervisors, and professionals such as engineers, architects and surveyors usually sit it before applying for a management or professional CSCS card.

You get 50 questions and 45 minutes, and the pass mark is 90%, so at least 45 answers need to be right. CITB refreshed the content in June 2023 and it now reaches further than older versions, which is why we suggest starting your revision early. Not sure this is your level? Compare it with the other papers on our CITB test page.

CITB Managers and Professionals Test Contains

Questions are grouped into five sections, each looking at how you manage risk and protect the people working under you.

01

Section A: Legal and management

Your legal duties as a manager and how safety is planned and organised on a project.

02

Section B: Occupational health, wellbeing and welfare

Looking after workers’ health and wellbeing, and the welfare facilities they rely on.

03

Section C: General safety

Day-to-day safety across the site and the controls that keep people out of harm’s way.

04

Section D: High risk activities

Work where the consequences of getting it wrong are most serious, and how it should be controlled.

05

Section E: Environment

Protecting the surroundings of the site and dealing with waste responsibly.

How to Prepare for Your CITB Managers and Professionals Test

The bar is set high at 90%, so plan your revision properly rather than cramming in the final week.

01

Work through all five sections

Cover legal and management, health and welfare, general safety, high risk activities and the environment, not only your strongest areas.

02

Try the sample test

CITB offers a 13-question sample test, which is a handy way to see how the questions are put together.

03

Build in extra time

The June 2023 update widened the content, so give yourself more revision time than older guides suggest.

Which CSCS Card Will You Get?

Which card fits you comes down to the job you do and the qualifications you hold. These are the ones managers and professionals most often apply for.

B
Managers

CSCS Black Managers Card

For site, project and contracts managers in senior roles who can show the right level of management competence.

G
Supervisors

CSCS Gold Supervisors Card

For supervisors who hold an NVQ or SVQ Level 3 in a relevant construction subject.

P
Professionals

CSCS Professionally Qualified Person Card

For people in professional roles connected to construction, such as engineers, architects and surveyors.

A

CSCS Academically Qualified Person Card

What Happens If You Fail?

A miss isn’t the end of the road. You can book the Managers and Professionals test again once 48 hours have passed. Look at which sections cost you marks, put extra time into those, and work through more practice questions before you go back in.

Other CITB Tests

Is MAP the wrong level for the work you do? These are the other CITB HS&E tests we regularly book for candidates.

Operatives Test

The standard test for labourers and site operatives, and usually the first step towards a green CSCS card.

Specialists Test

For workers in specialist trades, with questions on the chosen specialism as well as the core safety areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should sit the Managers and Professionals test?

It's aimed at people who run sites or lead teams, such as site and project managers and supervisors, as well as professionals like engineers, architects and surveyors. Most people sit it because they need it for a management or professional CSCS card.

What's the format and pass mark?

You'll have 50 questions to answer in 45 minutes. The pass mark is 90%, which means getting at least 45 of the 50 right.

What does the MAP test cover?

Questions come from five sections: A, legal and management; B, occupational health, wellbeing and welfare; C, general safety; D, high risk activities; and E, environment. CITB updated the content in June 2023, so older revision notes may not cover everything.

Is MAP harder than the Operatives test?

The length and pass mark are the same, but the questions are written for people in charge. Expect to think about your legal duties, planning work safely and protecting the people under you, rather than just your own safety on site. Most people find it needs more revision for that reason.

How much does the test cost?

The CITB HS&E Test booking fee is £47, which includes the CITB test fee (£23.50) along with our booking/processing service fee.

How do I book the test with Coteca?

Fill in the booking form or call us with your contact details, ID and a photo, and let us know your current role. We'll find a test centre near you, agree a date and time, make the booking and email you the confirmation.

What ID do I need to bring?

Bring ID that meets CITB's ID policy, and check it against the policy before the day rather than on the morning. If your ID doesn't meet the policy, the centre won't let you sit the test and the fee is lost.

What time should I get to the test centre?

Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your start time. It gives you time to check in, show your ID and put your things away without feeling rushed.

Can I take my phone or bag into the test room?

No. Phones, keys, watches, wallets and bags all go in a locker before you start. You can't bring anyone in with you either, so a friend or colleague will need to wait elsewhere.

Any misconduct during the test means you forfeit the fee, so leave everything in the locker and keep to the centre's rules.

Can I change or cancel my booking?

Yes, as long as you give at least 72 hours' notice. Get in touch with us as soon as you know your plans have changed and we'll help you sort it out.

What happens if I fail?

It isn't the end of the road. You can sit the test again after 48 hours. Look at which sections caught you out and spend your revision time there before you rebook.

Which CSCS card can I apply for after passing?

That depends on your job and qualifications. Common routes are the CSCS Black Managers Card, the CSCS Gold Supervisors Card, the Professionally Qualified Person Card and the Academically Qualified Person Card.

How should I revise for the MAP test?

Work through all five sections rather than just the ones you know from your job. CITB's 13-question sample test is a useful way to see how questions are worded, and since the June 2023 update widened the content, it pays to start revising earlier than you think you need to.
