About the SMSTS Refresher Course
The SMSTS refresher is for people who have already passed the full SMSTS course and need to renew their certificate. It brings you up to date with changes in legislation and good practice, and goes back over the key principles from the original course.
It usually runs over 2 days and combines written assessment with practical exercises. These check that you have taken in the updated material, so you can carry on managing safety on site with confidence and stay compliant.
- Valid certificate holders: you must have completed the full five-day SMSTS course (or a previous refresher) and your certificate must still be in date.
- Site managers and supervisors: the course is aimed at people in management or leadership roles on site, including project managers and senior supervisors.
- Proof of certification: you will need evidence of your current SMSTS certificate. Without it, you cannot join the refresher.
- Expiry rules: certificates last five years. If yours expires, even by one day, you must take the full five-day course again.
- Awarding body: CITB (Site Safety Plus)
- Duration: 2 days, online or in the classroom
- Assessment: written assessment plus group exercises
- Result: a new SMSTS certificate valid for another 5 years
