What Is the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test?

The CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test is intended to verify your knowledge concerning health and safety regulation, site environmental awareness, and best practice. Often, these tests must be passed to gain a CSCS card or renew one in the United Kingdom. The CITB further runs this test via various test centres which are managed by Pearson across the country using the computer-based assessment, rather popularly called the CITB Touch Screen Test. The test sets 50 questions in various knowledge areas to be answered within 45 minutes. Sitting and getting Pass in this CITB Exam shows construction companies and regulators that you have an established base-level understanding of site safety, hazards, and environment. At Coteca, we guide candidates in booking and preparing the test across the UK and major cities such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow.

CITB Test Categories: Operatives, Specialists, MAP

The very first step involves deciding which CITB test types to actually attempt. There are three main levels:

  1. Operatives
  2. Specialists, and
  3. Managers & Professionals (MAP)

The Operatives Test is the base level. It assures that workers have the essential awareness of the fundamental health, safety, and environmental matters before going onto a site. The Operatives variant focuses on 5 key knowledge areas:

  1. Working Environment
  2. Occupational Health
  3. Safety
  4. High Risk Activities
  5. and Environment.

The candidate will face 50 multiple-choice questions in a duration of 45 minutes. One must correctly answer at least 45 questions (90%) in order to pass.

Specialist Test : The Specialist Test considers the Operatives Test content and one specialist area relevant to the candidate’s trade. The specialization such as:

  • supervisory (SUP)
  • Work at height
  • Heating
  • Plumbing
  • Demolition
  • Lifting operations,
  • Tunneling
  • Ductwork
  • Pipefitting
  • Refregistration
  • Air conditioning
  • And others.

The MAP (Managers & Professionals) Test: It is for managers and professional staff who might be concerned with broader and deeper issues of leadership, law, risk management, and site supervision. The current version of the CITB MAP Test is divided into five sections, they are as:

  1. Legal & Management
  2. Occupational Health / Welfare
  3. General Safety
  4. High Risk Activities
  5. and Environment

Since this role is supervisory and decision-making in nature, the contents of the MAP Test are less trade-specific and more oriented towards strategic health and safety knowledge.

Now you can fully comprehend these CITB test types and can select the one according to your job on site (operatives, specialist, or management) before making a decision.
